The Art Of Crafting

Do’s and don’ts to keep projects fun and fresh

By Jason Schaitz

Arts-and-crafts projects are one of the cornerstones of camp activities. It is important to plan and organize these projects so campers understand what’s expected. Here are some tips in managing arts and crafts:

1. Have a plan. Find examples of what types of projects will work and obtain a list of necessary supplies.

2. Look into kits that have all the supplies needed to complete a project. They may be pricier, but will often save a lot of time and effort.

3. Keep a detailed inventory of all supplies. This will make ordering much easier and ensure there are enough supplies for the duration of camp.

4. Limit waste. Control the supplies that are distributed and keep leftovers in a bin; on days when an activity is needed, pull out the bin and let campers choose what they want to work on.

Here are some tips in coordinating projects:

1. Choose creative crafts that kids can use, like a water-bottle holder, picture frame, etc. Drawing, coloring, and paper crafts are fun, but most will end up in the trash later. Creating something useful at camp will generate enthusiasm.

2. Limit paint, glue, or markers to reduce waste, and avoid running out of materials. More can always be given out, but some things can’t be reused, so always begin with less.

3. Demonstrate how to do a craft first and have a finished product campers can see. Some campers, especially in younger groups, may take a long time to understand the instructions in completing a project. If they have a demo or a visual, it will help them to finish the project in the allotted time.

4. Discuss specifics prior to beginning a craft. Vinyl table covers work great and are easy to clean. Those campers not cleaning up before and after a project will quickly have an unorganized mess.

5. Make sure there is enough time to complete a craft. Some projects can be finished quickly, while others take much more time. Plan accordingly and always have a backup plan.

6. Keep it simple. Some projects are just not feasible in the allotted time or with the supplies available at camp. The projects may look great on the surface, but when trying to complete large, complicated projects with a large group of kids, the activity can go south quickly.

As with anything else, having a plan and staying organized will ensure that projects come off without a hitch. Provide the right tools, time, and space, and campers will be amazed at what they can create!
